For a butt-less country – cigarette butts that is.

A registered non-profit association, aimed at keeping Israel cigarette-butt free.

A country without cigarette litter” is a registered non-profit association, which aims to reduce the filth of discarded cigarettes in Israel. Our target is to raise public awareness, encourage the use of ashtrays, and promote and expand legislation and enforcement of existing regulations and laws.

Cigarette litter is the most common debris in the world. Cigarette butts are a serious problem, endangering us all, but especially infants and children. Cigarette litter contaminates ground and water sources, harms animals, yet it is relatively easy to resolve the problem.

Please help in keeping the country cleaner, by never discarding cigarettes (or any garbage) on the beaches, in parks, or anywhere else.

We believe that through a concentrated effort, we can reach those Israelis who do dirty up public spaces, and we also want to make all citizens aware of their personal responsibility. The very establishment of this association serves as a personal example for advancing social and environmental awareness and responsibility.

Please note that we are neither for nor against smoking. We only want to save our environment and keep it butt-free.

Our website offers unique information about this problem in Israel; about the magnitude of the problem, the possible solutions, and how you can volunteer. We also add information about the association’s activities, and updates from Israel and around the world. Please take a moment to sign our petition for a cleaner country, and do please fill out the questionnaire. If you want to take an active part of the change taking place, please read the “Can you volunteer?” page, and/or add yourself to our mailing list for updates.

Ok – tell me how cigarette butts cause damage.

  1. Environmental contamination. Cigarette butts are the most common filth pollutant on land, and the second most common in the seas. Poisons in the ends (cadmium, lead, Acetic acid, arsenic, phosphorus) leach into water sources and otherwise pollute the environment. (More information)
  2. Harm to infants and animals. Cigarette butts can cause chocking and poisoning in children and animals.
  3. Major cause of fires. Worldwide, including Israel, cigarette debris is the number one cause of fires.
  4. Esthetic and commercial damage. Cigarettes are a primary source of litter. Cleaning up is problematical and expensive.
